One of the first things I noticed was the many programable features of the DC-2BU. As with any double edged sword, this doesn't come without a price. Simply put, the DC2-BU is complicated to program. When Leafriver designed their scouting systems it is obvious they designed the detection circuitry, then threw a camera in and failed to integrate the two. When programing any of their models you have to program the camera and detection circuitry independent of each other. This takes time and a little scratching of the head, but I do like having the many options these cameras offer. Having said all this, Leafriver has addressed this by shipping each unit pre-programmed with basic features. All the user needs to program is the date and time.
Picture quality on the DC-2BU is good, especially at night. Flash range tests are some of the best ever. You'll notice in the sample pictures that the flash is reaching across the entire food plot. One of leafriver's exclusive features is their 5 zone detection area. This is supposed to expand the sensing zone to a full 90 degrees. In our testing we did notice that the DC-2BU's detection zone was wider than most. However, it seemed to be more comparable to the stealth models which advertise a detection angle of 48 degrees. The wider detection zone of Leafriver and Stealth models allow a user to place a scouting camera over a food plot with a wide field of view and still capture images of animals that never wander into the center of the picture. The DC-2BU has an average trigger time of about 3 seconds and a detection range of about 40'.
All of Leafriver's trail cameras incorporate a stout mounting bracket along with an equally stout locking bar included in the base price of each model. This is a welcomed feature and gives them a notch up on most of their competition. Typical battery life should give you a solid month out in the field. Finally, not only do Leafriver models have video capability, they allow you to program the length of video anywhere from 3 to 90 seconds. Extended lengths of video can increase the chance of catching that buck chasing a doe. |
