Trailcampro Analysis
As with all the new Moultrie cameras, the cameras design is very large and extremely bulky. The camera measures at 9" X 7" X 5" and weighs several pounds. The camera is designed to blend into a tree or stump but it does a poor job of that.
Detection Circuit
1.5 stars
The D55's detection zone is typical of a Moultrie camera; slow trigger (2.4 seconds), slow recovery (60 seconds) and limited detection range (30 ft.). However, they did widen the detection zone, making this a more viable option for small food plots. We should also note, the 2.4 second trigger is actually an improvement over older Moultrie cameras.
Picture Quality
3.5 stars
We are actually quite happy with the quality of both the day and night photos. That is what the D55 will hang its hat on, great picture quality.
The night pictures have a good color and are very bright. The night photos are clear and the flash range extends out to 50 sometimes 60 ft.
Battery Life
1.8 stars
The D55 requires 6 C cell batteries and you should only expect 3-4 weeks of battery life from typical alkaline batteries. This is below average. This camera also performs rather poorly in colder climates.
As you can see from the data below, both day and night current draws are pretty good. However, the resting current draw is slightly high and the duration of photo is extremely long. This, coupled with the camera using C cell batteries, is why you can expect a short battery life.

Ease of Use
2.2 stars
As with most of the older Moultrie cameras, the cameras design is large and bulky. The camera measures at 9" X 7" X 5" and weighs several pounds. The camera is designed to blend into a tree or stump but it does a poor job of that.
Programming is very simple, but there aren't many options to choose from. Durability of the camera is what you typical of the inexpensive cameras. You can expect about a year of life from this camera.
Overall, we like the Moultrie D55 Flash camera much more then it's IR counterpart, the D55 IR, because the night photos are bright, clear and blur-free. For $100, this is a great option for a flash camera.
