Moultrie M-100 Review

|
| Bottom Line: The Moultrie M-100 is an interesting camera in several respects. The picture quality, 2" viewer, time-lapse feature and the tiny size of the camera make it very valuable. However, the slow recovery time and blurry night photos will hold the camera back in game trail situations.

Trailcampro Analysis
The Moultrie M-100 does not have the same detection circuit and features as the M80 series. While these two models share many of the same parts, the M100 lags behind with regard to battery life & recovery time.
Picture Quality
4.3 stars
The infrared night flash is absolutely huge. The M-100 has a legitimate 90 foot flash. However, if there is movement there will be substantial blur. There is not a setting to adjust the night flash.
The day pictures are bright, clear and have good color. That being said, day photos in which the animal is moving will exhibit a certain level of blur depending upon the speed of the animal.
Detection Circuit
2.5 stars
The detection circuit is average; the trigger speed is 1.6 seconds and the detection zone is slightly wider than the field of view. This is not up to the standard of the M80 XT or M80 Black.
The biggest downside is the hefty 30 second recovery time (even though there is a setting for 15 seconds). This camera will not work efficiently on game trails.
Battery Life
2.2 stars
Low day and night current draws, combined with a low resting current are good to see. However, the viewing screen makes the camera draw a current for 16 seconds, severely diminishing the M100's battery life.

This camera uses 8 AA batteries and can utilize Tenergy Nimh Rechargeable Batteries for extended battery life. You can expect 3-4 weeks of battery life. This is a disappointing number considering many cameras get over 3 months of battery life.
Ease of Use
4 stars
The M-100 is 5" x 4" and stands as one of the smallest camera traps on the market. The outer case is durable, the buttons work easily and it does an excellent job protecting the camera from the weather.
The 2" internal viewing screen works flawlessly to view taken pictures, but maybe more importantly, it will give you a screen shot of the area in front of the camera. This makes setting the camera up, in a new location, a breeze.
As an added bonus, you can use the M-100 for time lapse (taking pictures at different time intervals regardless of motion). This makes scouting a large field much easier. However, when set to time lapse, the camera does not detect motion - only takes pictures at the different time intervals. Also, the video has audio capabilities, which makes for a more realistic scene.
The slow recovery time and blurry day/night photos are the biggest obstacles to the M-100. The viewing screen is nice but not at the price you pay for decreased battery life. While the camera is still solid overall, we believe the Moultrie M-80 XT is a better overall option and value.
