Security Trail Cameras
Using a game camera for security surveillance is both smart and cost-effective. However, not all trail cameras make good security cameras. This page is designed to guide you to the cameras that make excellent security cameras.
What makes a good Security Camera?
- Infrared Flash (covert infrared being preferable)
- Fast Detection Circuits
- Solid Night Pictures (minimal blurring)
- Long Battery Life
- Security Features (locks and security cases being available)
- Wireless/Cellular Capabilities - not a must but a nice option
Covert/Black Flash Infrared Cameras
• Invisible infrared flash at night
• Fast Detection Circuits
• Solid Night Pictures
• Long Battery Life
• Plenty of Security options
• License Plate Camera (Reconyx SM750)
The security cameras above are the perfect security cameras for most applications.
The benefit to the Covert/Black Flash Infrared is the intruder will not be able to see any visible light from the camera as it is taking pictures of them. The downside is the initial cost will be higher.

Wireless/Cellular/Wifi Security Cameras
• Wireless, Cellular or Wifi Abilities
• Red-glow Infrared Flash
• Fast Detection Circuits
• Solid Night Pictures
• Solid Battery Life
• Security Options
The security cameras above are great if you need the camera sent to a different location.
For instance, the Scoutguard SG580M can send a picture (within 60 seconds of being taken) to your cell phone of email. If an intruder breaks into your house or business, within 60 seconds of the picture being taken you can know who is there and where they are.
The Spypoint Tiny Wireless sends pictures to a "black box," located within 50 ft. of the camera. If somebody steals your camera, you can simply retrieve the pictures taken from the camera by going to the black box you hid.
The Wildgame Pulse 10x can send pictures through wifi. This is an option that works well if you have a camera set up in or near your house/business that you want to monitor activity while you are there.
Red-Glow Infrared Flash Security Cameras
• Red-glow Infrared Flash
• Fast Detection Circuits
• Solid Night Pictures
• Solid Battery Life
• Security Options
• Small/Compact Camera design
These are the cameras that still work well for security purposes at a much reduced price. The one thing to consider is the red-glow infrared from these models that an intruder can see if they look directly at the camera.
The Reconyx HC500 is unarguably the best red-glow infrared camera on the market. Quickest detection circuit on the market, covers a large amount of sq. feet and takes quality day and night pictures. The only downside is the price can be a bit prohibitive.
The Bushnell Trophy Cam is a tried and trued camera that has excelled in multiple applications for years. The quick detection, compact design and excellent battery life have made it a favorite for folks needing an inexpensive trail camera.
The Leupold RCX-2 has the quick detection circuit, excellent night and day photos and solid battery life you would expect from a red-glow security camera.
