Trailcampro Analysis
The Spypoint IR8 is the totally reworked model from the previous years Spypoint IR-A, IR-B and IR-C models.
Upgrades include; smaller, more efficient camera design, use of AA batteries (improved the battery life), quicker trigger time (1.043 seconds) and the camera actually pops out of the case (handy for programming or checking images).
The IR8 also has a very nice 2.4" internal viewing screen, which makes checking photos very simple. The overall construction of the outside of the case is very durable. However, the inside seems to be a bit flimsy. The battery compartment is too thin, as I feel I will break it whenever I try to open it. I do like that Spypoint has glued a quick setup guide on the inside of the camera, just in case you forgot the owners manual.
The setup is very simple, and user-friendly. You will not have a problem setting this camera up. I have long admired Spypoint for their great, hassle-free programming.
As you can see in the sample photos (above), the day pictures are of average quality. They neither "wow" me nor disappoint me. The night pictures, however, are underwhelming. The center of the images seem to be lighted up sufficiently, the edges are dramatically darker though. Also, if there is movement from an animal in the photo, you can expect there to be a great deal of blur.
I was also disappointed that Spypoint increased its recovery time, when other companies are decreasing theirs. 60 seconds is the quickest this camera can be set to recover. You can set the camera to shoot in burst mode, to get multiple pictures of the same animal. This, however, is not nearly as efficient nor accurate as a quick recovery time. This eliminates it from using it on a fast moving trail setup.
I would rate this as an average camera overall. I believe it is not a good value for the money as there are lesser priced cameras that are much more versatile, fast and take better photos. I think the price on this camera is too much. I will say, that Spypoint has always been good about updating their cameras throughout the year and we reserve the right to change our opinion on the value of this camera if they fix the recovery time and the blurry night photos.
