Browning Spec Ops trail camera

2017 Browning Spec Ops Platinum Review

- This camera is known for outstanding video quality and a nice 2" internal viewing screen. The Spec Ops doesn't excel in picture taking, but it is an elite video trail camera. - TCP Staff

Model # BTC-8FHD-P | Browning Spec Ops Owner's Manual

Pros

  • Incredible video quality
  • Very fast video detection
  • 2" Internal viewing screen

Cons

  • Max of 20 second night videos
  • Slow picture trigger speed

Trailcampro Analysis

The Spec Ops Platinum is a no glow infrared game camera with a 2" internal viewer. This internal viewer can be used to position the camera and look at the pictures/videos the camera has taken.

Picture Quality

Photo resolution: 10 mpxl | Video Resolution: 1920 x 1080 w/ audio | Flash Type: No Glow Infrared

The day photos are similar to the Browning Recon Force. They look very pixelated even though they have really good color. Day pictures benefit greatly from reducing the mpxl setting down to a more native resolution - like medium (4 mpxl). This reduces the pixelation.

Night images have a lot of "white noise" and can be grainy. The night pictures are very middle of the road.

[powr-image-slider id=cddc8aea_1465240602]

Video quality is where the Spec Ops shines. Day videos are spectacularly clear, especially when given plenty of sunlight. The clarity and color is outstanding. Night videos have great flash range, clarity and record smoothly.

Battery Life

Resting Power (on): 1.16 mW | Daytime Power Consumption: 7.19 Ws | Nighttime Power Consumption: 9.81 Ws

The Spec Ops Platinum uses 8 AA batteries. Do yourself a favor and use lithium batteries for long life.

The day and night power consumption is higher than we would like to see. It is even higher than the Dark Ops and Strike Force cameras, which is mildly surprising.

If this camera were to take 35 day pictures and 35 night pictures every 24 hour period, this camera would last 5.2 months in the field on a set of lithium batteries.

Detection Circuit

Picture Trigger & Recovery Speed: 1.10 s. / 1.4 s. | Video Trigger & Recovery Speed: 0.94 s. / 1.5 s. | Detection Range: 60 ft.

This is the first time we have seen a cameras video trigger speed faster than the picture speed. 1.1 seconds on picture trigger speed is far too slow for a modern trail camera. The video speed is outstanding.

Detection range is 60 ft., which has been the most common range we have seen on all the 2016 trail cameras.

Overall, this camera excels in video detection and is average in picture detection.

Quality of Design

Dimensions: 5.5" x 4.25" x 3" | Battery Type: 8 AA Batteries | External Battery Jack: 12 Volt

This camera is incredibly easy to program, you won't need the owner's manual. Another benefit to the internal viewer, is it allows for bigger text in the setup screen - so no squinting or glasses needed.
You will find that case design is outstanding in the Spec Ops Platinum. We love the internal viewer, which doubles as a "Live Preview" when setting the camera up in the field. This camera feels well-made, buttons are crisp, batteries are easy to remove and replace - overall, this is one of the best case designs on the market.

The Spec Ops Platinum has all the basic setup options, but is missing some of the popular options, like password protection and start/stop time. If there is a weakness in this category, it would be the lack of programming options.

We have not had any warranty issues arise with the Spec Ops. If something does come up, we will update our review to reflect those findings.

Wonderful trail cam!

"I really love the video quality for this cam, and it works very well! I have no complaints, as it does what it's supposed to. Brad was SUPER nice to me during the ordering process, so I can only give this a big thumbs up!"

Shane R. (5/5)

Great company to buy from...but not the camera

"First, I rate this company 5 stars plus !!...I am so happy to have bought the camera from them..This camera...and a replacement they sent immediately was terrible...but, not this company...John took care of all concerns immediately and when the second camera had problems...i received credit immediately upon sending it back at their expense....I would not buy from anyone else !!....The camera, which i needed badly for property security, has a serious battery usage issue...it gobbled up the battery to where it would have used a set of batteries every 5 days or less....both cameras performed like that...the first one was worse and they thought it was defective...thus, the 2nd camera....the video was awesome and i had no complaints..it is exactly what i need...I did a lot of research before choosing it,....but these two that i received contradicted all the info Browning gave on battery usage/life and the many comments i have read about it.....at the moment....TCP techs are looking into this as I totally fault Browning about misrepresenting this camera's battery life....unless there is something wrong , of course....TCP will be letting me know what they found and I will update this review as appropriate.....again, this company gets 5 plus stars and if they had what i wanted...i would buy it from them!!...you won't be sorry."

Mary W. (1/5)

No glow

"I love this camera, have it set on video and it takes fantastic video's day and night, thanks trail cam pro."

Roy H. (5/5)

Browning Spec Ops

"Great pictures. Wider than older model. extremely tight in security box. Security cable holes in center instead of bottom, had to drill new hole in security box."

Joseph K. (5/5)

Browning Spec Ops Platinum

"Good documentation Easy set up"

Ken S. (5/5)

Very satisfied

"Purchased camera for purpose of video only with black flash. Have not been disappointed yet. Surprised by the very good battery life using rechargeable, night quality, and the sound is outstanding. At night deer have no clue there is a camera there. Can't wait to see the great videos that will be produced as the rut approaches."

Bob G. (5/5)

First time using a digital

"First time using a digital camera. Very happy with videos. Haven't tried still pictures. Mainly want videos."

Dale A. (5/5)

Spec Ops

"This review will be basically the same as the Recon force. John was kind enough to send me one of each of these units at release and they arrived in good time as usual. I have since had them on test in the garden. I use my cameras for wildlife monitoring and having been impressed with the 2015 model because of its very rapid video trigger (a feature manufacturers almost without exception seem to overlook), I was keen to see if Browning had made any improvements in this department. Unfortunately, although fast in this regard, I must report it is a wee bit slower than last years offering. However, the video and sound quality, even on the lowest setting, is outstanding. Unfortunately trigger response for images is way, way too slow and the results are in my view well below parr and could do with significant improvement The rest of the set is great, case design, reintroduction of the internal screen all score highly. This camera is perhaps let down by the continued absence of the security code setting, which is a reassuring feature rendering the camera beyond use should somebody unpleasant and determined take a fancy to it. I always secure my units with the metal security boxes and Python cables supplied by Trailcampro, but it would be useful to see that feature return next year. Overall this is a great camera - if you want covert video. For this purpose there is nothing better at this price point, but there are other brands that beat it hands down in the image contest."

Q&A

I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly--a human (trespasser) would not be able to detect the infrared flash at night?
That is correct for any no glow trail camera (as long as they aren't using night vision).
Greetings, Do you sell an external plug-in 12v battery like the Moultrie Camera Battery Box? I wish to purchase a Browning 2016 Spec Ops Platinum and an external 12v battery for it. Thanks!
No, we sell the Moultrie Solar Power Panel, but not the external battery by itself. http://www.trailcampro.com/collections/moultrie-game-cameras/products/moultrie-12-volt-power-panel
