 Camojojo Trace Trail Camera Review

 Pros

  • Great picture quality
  • Night videos are outstanding
  • Live streaming video
  • Affordable data plans

 Cons

  • Does not use an SD card (it has 28.5 GB of internal storage)
  • Daytime videos that are transmitted are quite grainy (will need to do the HD upload to get the better video)

The Camojojo Trace is a cellular trail camera that sends pictures and videos and even has a live stream option. To date, this is one of the most impressive cellular cameras we have seen at a fraction of the price of cameras that have similar ratings and specs.

Picture Quality:  90/100

Photo resolution:   5 mpxl

Video resolution:   1920 x 1080

Flash TypeRed Glow IR

The night pictures have really impressed us and display great contrast, clarity and flash range. These are top-notch night photos for any red glow IR trail camera.

Day pictures have realistic color and solid clarity. They are above average but not nearly as impressive as the night pictures. Overall, the picture quality is still a big plus.

The sample videos are directly from the app and represent the video quality you can expect immediately. The full-resolution video (higher quality) can be requested via the app or downloaded directly from the camera using a USB cable.

The uploaded daytime video quality is fairly grainy and hard to follow. If you download the full-resolution videos, they are far better. The night videos that are automatically uploaded are much, much better. This is presumably because IR videos require far less data to transmit than color daytime videos/pictures.

What if you purchase from us and aren't happy with the image quality?

This is a common question and we have a very simple solution. Call, email, or chat with us and we can take a look at the images and offer suggestions or immediately tell if something is wrong with the camera. If so, we will warranty the camera for you (with the free 2-Year warranty you receive from us) or return the camera for a full refund (within 90 days of purchase). You have control of the process, remember, we work for you.

Battery Life:    70/100

Picture & Video Resting Power (on):  0.79 mW

Picture Daytime/Nighttime Power Consumption:  14.8 Ws  |  16.3 Ws

Here are your best battery options:

Trailcampro Choice: AmpTORRENT Rechargeable AA Lithium

In Boost mode (sending the photo/video immediately), if this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night pictures every 24 hours, it would last 2.4 months in the field - per charge - on a set of AmpTorrent Rechargeable AA Lithium batteries.

In Eco mode (sending photos in batches), if this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night pictures every 24 hours, it would last 5 months in the field - per charge - on a set of AmpTorrent Rechargeable AA Lithium batteries.

There are a number of benefits to these batteries; up to 1,200 recharges, consistent 1.5 volt operation, charges with the included USB cable, eco-friendly (less batteries in a landfill), and the batteries pay for themselves after 2-3 recharges.

Longest Lasting Choice: Energizer Ultimate Lithium

In Boost mode (sending the photo/video immediately), with this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night pictures every 24 hours, the Camojojo Trace would last 3.6 months in the field on a set of 12 AA Lithium Batteries.

In Eco mode (sending photos in batches), with this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night pictures every 24 hours, the Camojojo Trace would last 7.5 months in the field on a set of 12 AA Lithium Batteries.

Ultimate Lithium batteries provide the longest-lasting battery choice due to their incredible consistency and capacity. We have loved these batteries for a long time, however, in recent years they have become incredibly expensive and not the most cost-effective option.

Detection Circuit:     90/100

Picture Trigger & Recovery Speed:  0.29 s.  | 28.1 s.

Video Trigger & Recovery Speed:   0.57 s.  |  21.1 s.

Detection Range & Angle:  90 ft. @ n/a (54° field of view angle)

The Camojojo Trace has excellent speed and recovery times. Picture detection is faster than video but they are both still fast enough for most, if not all, animals. The detection range is fairly standard for a modern trailcam. Overall, this detection circuit is great.

Quality of Design:     86/100

Dimensions:  5.75" x 4" x 3.25"

Battery Type:  12 AA

External Battery Jack:  6-volt

Case Design

The Camojojo immediately jumps out at us from the unique antenna on top of the camera. It is the first we have seen like this. It is wide and flat and sits on top of the camera almost like a solar panel. We've experienced really good reception and would expect it to work in areas with just 2 bars of reception.

The rest of the case design is fairly straightforward. The bottom half opens easily, exposing the power switch, sim card, and battery tray eject button. The Trace does not use an SD card.  All photos are transmitted over the app or downloaded via a USB cable directly attached to the camera.

The Trace ships with an angle mount that attaches to most trees using a standard nylon strap. The camera easily slides on and off the mount for battery changes.

The camera has a tripod mount on the bottom and the back of the camera. It will also accept a python lock on the back of the camera. Overall, the Camojojo has a nice case design with a really cool antenna.

Camera Setup

Without an internal screen or setup menu, the camera programs almost entirely from the app.

  1. Download Camojojo app
  2. Create an account
  3. Hit the plus button and scan the QR code on the inside of the camera.

Setup is extremely easy and user-friendly.

Data plan costs are extremely inexpensive, especially for videos and live streaming.

The Camojojo is refreshingly nice and easy to navigate. It feels like it was built by an experienced programmer that understands the settings trail camera enthusiasts would want. It even has animal recognition that can instantly sort your pictures by animal species without any additional cost or upcharge.

Want livestream? You get 20 minutes of live stream per month. Want videos? It will send unlimited videos on the monthly or annual plans. Want the full resolution photo of that big buck? You can request HD download (see data chart).

The Camojojo does not store photos on an SD card. Instead, it writes all data to 28.5 GB of internal memory. The manufacturer cited compatibility issues with different types of SD cards as the driving force for this decision.  HD images can be downloaded using the app or transferred directly from the camera to a computer using a USB-C cord. Please note there are limitations to the number of monthly downloads using the app (see data chart above).  No SD card is a downside to us, but certainly not a deal-breaker. We just wanted to add this so that those of you that are used to traditional trail cameras aren't surprised. The phone app has 365 days of cloud storage, so be sure to download and save any photos you want to keep permanently.

FAQ's: Trail Camera

Q: Will this trail camera trigger on small animals (birds, rodents, etc.)?

A: Trail cameras detect on a combination of heat and movement, so, yes, small mammals will trigger the camera. However, if you are going after smaller warm-blooded mammals, we recommend getting the camera closer to your target. For best performance, place the camera in an area that would enable picture detection from 3 - 20 ft.

Q: Can animals see the infrared flash on this camera?

A: Yes, this is a red glow infrared camera. If looking directly at the camera, you will see a red glow. This isn't super obvious but can be spotted if looking for it.

Q: Where can I purchase this camera?

A: From us! We hope to woo you with our incredible charm, two-year warranty, 90-day returns, free continental U.S. shipping, and technical expertise.

Seriously, though, we know you have plenty of options of where to spend your hard-earned money. The internet can be the wild, wild, west of too-good-to-be-true deals. If you choose to do business with us, we will go out of our way to make sure you are happy with the camera you select and the service we provide you.

We are passionate about testing and reviewing trail cameras, but most importantly, we are passionate about treating our customers the right way. We do things differently from what you have come to expect from other internet retailers and we hope you give us the opportunity to prove that to you.

OK, not great

"Picture quality is just ok, and the live view is a neat idea. But the video quality is not good at all! I paid for the 10 minutes of video and probably only received 3-4 minutes of video before I was informed that I needed to Purchase more. I think every time you check the video weather it be for 10 sec or a minute you get charged for the minute of time. For the money I will stick with Tactacam Reveal."

Won't work on a computer...

"Bought 2 Camojojo Traces. Not really satisfied with them. They don't seem to be well thought out. Other than taking a laptop to the camera and hooking in with a cable, there is no way to view or interact with the camera through a computer. I cannot communicate to the camera through the computer without the cable...PERIOD. The only way to view pictures or communicate is with a cellphone. This has huge drawbacks. The pictures are very small and can only be magnified if they are individually downloaded to the phone. I purchased these cameras primarily because they offer Timelapse. However since the only viewing option is to use a cellphone, it makes the timelapse of a field impossible. The only animals that are visible are close enough to have triggered the motion detector anyway. Anything out in the field is invisible on a 1"x2" photo and it is unrealistic to download 100s of timelapse photos to my phone's gallery. Wish I knew this before I purchased! Will NOT buy anymore until I can use a computer to interact with the cameras."

Can't Burst your Buck but can video his tail...

"This camera is OK... I bought a couple of them. I have not been able to get the 2P or 3P photo burst to work whether it's in Photo only or Video and Photo Mode. Also the video trigger time is much slower than photo trigger, so I will often have a photo of an animal centered in the frame, then a video of their butt just leaving the frame. Photo and video quality is OK - but not impressive. It's my first cellular camera, so I am not sure what to expect. It takes a ton of batteries, but life is OK. Still planning to add the solar panel and wishing I would have bought panels with both my cameras. Get what you pay for with this one I think. Hoping firmware and app updates will improve the function. Setup was super easy. Night-time photos are decent - flash works fine."

It works

"This thing works pretty well so far. I’ve had it 2 weeks and the slowest video send time was 2 min. Fastest was about 15 sec. With signal at 60%, Videos are plenty clear for me without and HD downloads. Only reason I gave it four stars instead of five was because you can’t plug-in a signal boosting antenna"

The only camera I have that allows me to take a picture or video of how things look, NOW!

"I love this easy-to-set-up camera! The pictures are of good quality, and the night pictures are the best of my 6 trail cams."

Q&A

what is " Live Stream"
Live stream shows you what the camera is seeing in real time (there is about a 3-5 second delay)
What would I need to use/but to hook up a Camojojo Trace to a 6v battery?
You would have to find a compatible cable (we don't have it).
Would this work outside of the USA?
Only if they have ATT reception internationally
I see that the description stated the photos can be downloaded by usb cable. What is the most practical way to do this in the field?
The most practical if wanting to use the usb cable is to take a laptop into the field and download that way. Unfortunately, not a better way if wanting all the photos downloaded.
Does it except an external antenna and if so which one?
It does not support any booster antenna.
Can my son and grandson have the app on their phones and monitor it also?
Yes!
