Core Dual Sensor FAQ's

Bushnell Core DS Low Glow Trail Camera Review

Pros

  • Incredible detection circuit
  • 1-Year battery life
  • Easy programming and well-built case design

Cons

  • Somewhat narrow field of view (34.9°)

Picture Quality:

Photo resolution: 30 mpxl (interpolated)

Video resolution: 1920 x 1080 (60 fps) w/ audio

Flash Type: Red Glow IR

The Bushnell Core DS Low Glow has realistic color on the photos, average clarity, and good depth to each picture. Check out the sample photos below but we are quite impressed with how they turned out.

Night pictures really seem to benefit from the dual sensors. The night photos are clear, have very good contrast, and lack the white noise normally associated with a low glow game trail camera. Overall, picture quality is very impressive.

Video quality is outstanding and offers 60 frames per second at 1080 resolution. The clarity and focus is just a step below the best we've seen on the market, but outside of that, we believe you will find the day videos to be extremely impressive. Night videos have excellent contrast and clarity. We've also found the audio to be top-notch on the Dual Sensor Bushnell cameras.

What if you purchase from us and aren't happy with the image quality?

This is a common question and we have a very simple solution. Call, email, or chat with us and we can take a look at the images and offer suggestions or immediately tell if something is wrong with the camera. If so, we will warranty the camera for you (with the free 2-Year warranty you receive from us) or return the camera for a full refund (within 90 days of purchase). You have control of the process, remember, we work for you.

Megapixel Ratings:

In the past, many people get confused with the megapixel rating trail camera manufacturers advertise. Companies inflate the mpxl rating to attract eyes to their products. They do this through interpolation, which digitally adds megapixels to a photo without actually improving the picture.

The best way to judge picture quality is to look at actual pictures. You will notice this the most when you zoom in on a full-size image that a camera has taken. The details of the photo will appear hazy or even digitized. This is normal, and to be expected.

Battery Life:

Picture & Video Resting Power (on): 0.24 mW

Picture Daytime/Nighttime Power Consumption: 2.8 Ws | 2.8 Ws

Video Daytime/Nighttime Power Consumption: 23.6 Ws | 68.3 Ws

Picture Mode

If this camera were to take 35-day and 35-night pictures every 24 hours, the Core DS Low Glow would last 12.9 months in the field on a set of 6 AA Lithium Batteries.

Video Mode

If this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night videos (10-second videos) every 24 hours, it would last 1.9 months in the field on a set of lithium batteries.

Detection Circuit:

Picture Trigger & Recovery Speed: 0.17 s. | 0.6 s.

Video Trigger & Recovery Speed: 0.37 s. | 0.7 s.

Detection Range & Angle: 110 ft. @ 35.1 detection angle (34.9° field of view)

The Bushnell Core Dual Sensor's detection circuit is spectacular. Speed, distance, and consistency are on full display. These are extremely impressive numbers. If you want us to be picky, the only thing we would mention is that the field of view is more narrow than the average (industry standard is around 42°). Still, this is an incredible detection circuit.

Quality of Design:

Dimensions: 5.75" x 4" x 3"

Battery Type: 6 AA

External Battery Jack: 6-volt

Case Design

The Core Dual Sensor feels sturdy and well-built. The latch is easy to manipulate and has a positive snap when closing. The Core DS has a bracket on the back of the camera for a python cable lock and a threaded insert on the bottom for a Slate River Mount.

The SD card slot is easy to locate but you do have the push the card in quite for to lock in place and to release. Batteries load easily into the tray and slide in and out of the camera effortlessly. This is a really good case design.

Camera Setup

The setting menu is very easy to navigate and would be intuitive for first time trail camera users or experienced pro's. The Core DS game trail camera has popular settings like Hybrid Mode (picture + video), time lapse, and start/stop time (AM, PM, or 24 hours). The internal viewing screen makes field set up extremely simple, letting the user see exactly where the camera is pointed.

SD Card Storage Examples

With a 16 Gig SD card and the camera taking 8 mpxl photos (this is our recommended setting as it is closest to the native resolution), this camera could store 4,606 pictures on the SD card.

With a 16 Gig SD card and the camera taking 1920x1080 (60 fps) video resolution, this trailcam could store 409 10-second videos.

FAQ's: Bushnell Dual Sensor Trail Camera

Q: How do I view the pictures?

A: There are a number of ways to do this. Pictures/videos are stored on the SD card you place in the camera. Here are some other methods for viewing images:

  • You may view the pictures on the internal 1.5" picture viewer
  • View pictures on your computer. Plug the SD card in a desktop computer or laptop via the built-in SD card reader or use a USB reader if your computer doesn't have one. This method works for most tablets as well. With this method, we recommend having two SD cards per camera so you can swap them in the field.
  • Trail Camera Viewers. While more expensive, handheld viewers are useful if you don't have a smartphone or run multiple trail cameras.

Q: Will this trail camera trigger on small animals (birds, rodents, etc.)?

A: Trail cameras detect on a combination of heat and movement, so, yes, small mammals will trigger the camera. However, if you are going after smaller warm-blooded mammals, we recommend getting the camera closer to your target. For best performance, place the camera in an area that would enable picture detection from 3 - 20 ft.

Q: Can animals see the infrared flash on this camera?

A: Yes. This is a red glow trail camera, meaning it has a faint red glow when taking pictures or videos at night. Humans and animals can see this if looking at the camera. This does not "light up" the woods, though.

Q: Where can I purchase this camera?

A: From us! We hope to woo you with our incredible charm, two-year warranty, 90-day returns, free continental U.S. shipping, and technical expertise. If that isn't enough, we give you a 16 Gig SD card with this camera and you can call and talk our ear off anytime.

Seriously, though, we know you have plenty of options of where to spend your hard-earned money. The internet can be the wild, wild, west of too-good-to-be-true deals. If you choose to do business with us, we will go out of our way to make sure you are happy with the camera you select and the service we provide you.

We are passionate about testing and reviewing trail cameras, but most importantly, we are passionate about treating our customers the right way. We do things differently from what you have come to expect from other internet retailers and we hope you give us the opportunity to prove that to you.

Bushnell low glow

"Great camera! Nice day and night videos!"

Pierre J. (5/5)

We are volunteers with the

"We are volunteers with the Sky Island Alliance FotoFauna project using trail camera photos to document wildlife on the Arizona/Mexico border. Previously I have used a Cuddeback that takes great night-time color photos, but the setup is complicated. For the FotoFauna project I purchased the Bushnell Core DS Low Glow because the sensor is more sensitive and the field of view is narrower than on other cameras, which is what we need to detect nearby small animals coming to a water source. Very happy with the easy setup, quality of photos and video, and the advice from the TrailCamPro staff on photographing small animals at close range. One odd thing is the default photo aspect ratio is widescreen (the staff told me new trail cameras lack the ability to change the aspect ratio to full screen)."

Karen M. (5/5)

Awsome video

"Just love the day and night video's on this camera! A well built sturdy case design as well. Seems to have good trigger speed and recovery times. Don't know yet about battery life. Only had the camera for a month, but if it's anything like my other Bushnell cameras. The battery life will be excellent."

Allen B. (5/5)

Bushnell CORE DS Low Glow Trailcm

"Terrible manual. Poorly written and confusing. Luckily I already own an older model Trailcam and was able to figure how to use the new cam, a Bushnell CORE DS Low Glow. Otherwise the camera is very good for day and lesser so for night. I wish I had selected a No Glow instead of the Low Glow. Animals can definitely see the Low Glow at night. A deer actually licked my camera. Sorry, I didn't save that pic."

Russell B. (4/5)

Excellent image quality

"The Core DS cameras were simple to set up, although some of the settings are not well described in the on-line manual. The PIR sensor is more sensitive than my Reconyx cams, so still working on figuring out the best settings for these cams and my habitat (picks up waving veg from quite a distance). The photos and videos are superb, so very pleased with that aspect. The gimble mount combined with the LCD screen lets me aim the camera exactly where I want with no guesswork, which is a major plus. So far I would definitely recommend the Core DS to anyone. The IR flash does attract attention more than the Reconyx and is readily visible to humans as well, so if that's a concern then you might want to spring for the Core DS No Glow. Overall, I am very pleased that I bought these."

Chris D. (5/5)

Delivers as promised

"This game came does everything it claims. Having a great time viewing pictures and video of wildlife taken around the property. The support staff has been very helpful with questions when I called."

Thomas M. (5/5)

Excellent Night Pix

"We have a Browning Spec Ops Advantage, which takes better daytime pictures (color fidelity, field of view, detail), but the Bushnell takes excellent night pictures, with a lot of detail visible in the animals. If your main focus is catching night video or stills, this camera can't be topped as of July 2019."

Linda R. (4/5)

Reliable and Good Pictures

"I bought this camera two years ago and it is still rocking. I use it as a security and game camera on a road on my ranch. It can catch the license plates of vehicles, plus there is a lot of animal activity deer, feral hogs, coyotes, etc. in this area. Good night pictures as well as day pictures. Great camera! Beats the heck out of the Reconyx Hyperfire 2 that crashed at 14 months."

Bob (5/5)

I must retrieve the card

"I must retrieve the card to view photos. What a pain! Would prefer if the feed were uploaded to the Cloud or otherwise made available to me. Editing functions clumsy."

Edmund J. (3/5)

Bushnell DS

"I bought two of these cameras and have gone through several thousand pictures already. I also have two of the Browning Patriots which are a DS cameras. In the past I've used mid range cameras and wanted to upgrade but I didn't want to go to cellular cams. These cameras take great pictures. The Bushnell takes slightly better pictures than the Browning Patriots IMO. The night pictures are amazing. I don't do videos so I can't give feedback there. I like that it only uses 6 batteries. The cheapest lithium batteries I can find come in a 12 pack which works perfect for two cameras. My only grip is the time setting is military time only. The Trailcampro review and ratings on these cameras are spot on! I plan to buy more of the Bushnell DS when I can."

Q&A

Does this camera have a 12V port on it to hook a 12V battery to?
No, it has a 6 volt external battery jack.
Will this camera take 60 second videos at nighttime, and if so, will it take more than one during the night.
It takes a max of 15-seconds and yes, it will take many night videos
Is this camera's software compatible with Windows 10?
The photos and videos are, the camera does not have any special software.
where do I get a manual....the camera came with NOTHING...nothing resembling instructions....was a bitted peeved by this
They do not include a manual in their packaging, however, it is available online. Here is the link: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1065/8354/files/Manual_User_Guide_119936C_119938C__119975C_119977C_Core_Trail_Camera_ENGLISH.pdf?14055
I've had split-front trail cameras like this one before -- my prior model was a Browning model BTC-6HDP which worked well until water penetrated the case via bad weather sealing/gasketing on the front. I replaced the Browning with a bare-bones Bushnell 119836 which has better weather sealing than any other trail-cam I've ever owned. But the Bushnell's "wait 3 seconds before taking a shot" is not helpful. In my experience (four cameras over ~10 years) these cameras work pretty well for a few years until the weather sealing starts to go. I don't really care what the outside of the camera looks like; I don't need fancy. I want the camera to work consistently. I'd *like* to avoid getting a Reconyx because it will be stolen. What to do?
Any camera made in China should be expected to last 2-3 years. Outside of that, you would have to get a Reconyx is you want consistent durability over that time period.
A couple years ago,I bought a couple Bushnell "Aggressor" units I was very disappointed with. One reason was video clips had to be run thru "converter" software before they could be edited. DOES THIS B. CORE DS video have to be converted before edit ?
The videos are in mp4 format, the aggressor's were also mp4 but the older bushnell's were .avi.
Is this camera officially released? It's out of stock everywhere else
Yes, we currently have it in stock.
