 Night IR Blur Test

The equipment for the test consists of a target moving along a track from left to right at a constant speed controlled by a stepper motor and a sensor to trigger the capture of a picture near the center of the field of view of a trail camera.

The target is moving at 1.25 feet per second and is 10 feet from the camera at the center of field of view.  The test is conducted in a dark room.   Two pictures are taken, one with the target not moving and one with the target in motion.  A visual comparison can now be made of the two pictures.  All settings that affect the quality of night photos will be tested.

What if you purchase from us and aren't happy with the image quality?

This is a common question and we have a very simple solution. Call, email, or chat with us and we can take a look at the images and offer suggestions or immediately tell if something is wrong with the camera. If so, we will warranty the camera for you (with the free 2-Year warranty you receive from us) or return the camera for a full refund (within 90 days of purchase). You have control of the process, remember, we work for you.

Megapixel Ratings:

In the past, many people get confused with the megapixel rating trail camera manufacturers advertise.  Companies inflate the mpxl rating to attract eyes to their products.  They do this through interpolation, which digitally adds megapixels to a photo without actually improving the picture.

The best way to judge picture quality is to look at actual pictures.  You will notice this the most when you zoom in on a full-size image that a camera has taken.  The details of the photo will appear hazy or even digitized.  This is normal, and to be expected.

Battery Life: 90/100

Picture & Video Resting Power (on):  0.97 mW

The HD King is one of only a handful of trail cameras for sale that has an integrated solar panel built into the camera. The solar panel charges an internal 5200 mAh lithium battery. In addition to that, you will need to add 4 AA batteries. It is impossible for us to accurately calculate the extra battery life from the solar charger due to a ton of different conditions, so all battery life examples are based solely on the 4 AA batteries. Please understand, actual battery life will be much better than represented below.

Here are your best battery options:

Trailcampro Choice: AmpTORRENT Rechargeable AA Lithium

If this camera were to take 35-day and 35-night pictures every 24 hours, it would last 5 months in the field - per charge - on a set of AmpTorrent Rechargeable AA Lithium batteries.

If this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night videos every 24 hours, it would last 1.2 months in the field - per charge - on a set of AmpTorrent Rechargeable AA Lithium batteries.

There are a number of benefits to these batteries; up to 1,200 recharges, consistent 1.5 volt operation, charges with the included USB cable, eco-friendly (less batteries in a landfill), and the batteries pay for themselves after 2-3 recharges.

Longest Lasting Choice: Energizer Ultimate Lithium

If the this camera were to take 35-day and 35-night pictures every 24 hours, it would last 7.6 months in the field on a set of Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries.

If the this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night videos every 24 hours, it would last 1.8 months in the field on a set of Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries.

Ultimate Lithium batteries provide the longest-lasting battery choice due to their incredible consistency and capacity. We have loved these batteries for a long time, however, in recent years they have become incredibly expensive and not the most cost-effective option.

Picture Trigger & Recovery Speed:  0.54 s.  |  7 s.

Video Trigger & Recovery Speed:   0.81 s.  |  7 s.

Detection Range & Angle:  n/a (76° field of view)

The HD Solar King has a much slower detection range than most units. The one thing that lowers its score, you can only set a delay for down to 5 seconds.

Quality of Design: 84/100

Dimensions:  6" x 4" x 3"

Battery Type:   4 AA + internal rechargeable with attached solar panel

Case Design

The outer case has the appearance and feel of a solid, quality camera. It has a beefy back bracket for the included nylon strap and is compatible with a python cable lock. There are two tripod inserts, one on the top and one on the bottom, this is always a favorite feature of ours. The latches are small and a bit stiff to open.

The HD King is one of only a handful of trail cameras that has an integrated solar panel built into the camera. The solar panel charges an internal 5200 mAh lithium battery. In addition to that, you will need to add 4 AA batteries.

Loading batteries is easy, fast, and keeps the batteries snug. The SD card snaps in and out with relative ease. Overall, this is a solid case design with some clear advantages.

Camera Setup

Camera setup is started by turning the camera into setup mode and hitting the menu button twice. The 2" internal screen helps in setting the camera up, however, the words are a bit small and old eyes might struggle seeing a few of the settings. Overall, setup is easy and can be done rather quickly.

This camera has the ability to turn on the side sensors to increase or decrease the width of the detection zone. It also has password protection (optional), PIR sensitivity, and time lapse options.

FAQ's: Trail Camera

Q: Will this trail camera trigger on small animals (birds, rodents, etc.)?

A: Trail cameras detect on a combination of heat and movement, so, yes, small mammals will trigger the camera. However, if you are going after smaller warm-blooded mammals, we recommend getting the camera closer to your target. For best performance, place the camera in an area that would enable picture detection from 3 - 20 ft.

Q: Can animals see the infrared flash on this camera?

A: Yes, this is a red glow IR trail camera.

Q: Where can I purchase this camera?

A: From us! We hope to woo you with our incredible charm, two-year warranty, 90-day returns, free continental U.S. shipping, and technical expertise.

Seriously, though, we know you have plenty of options of where to spend your hard-earned money. The internet can be the wild, wild, west of too-good-to-be-true deals. If you choose to do business with us, we will go out of our way to make sure you are happy with the camera you select and the service we provide you.

We are passionate about testing and reviewing trail cameras, but most importantly, we are passionate about treating our customers the right way. We do things differently from what you have come to expect from other internet retailers and we hope you give us the opportunity to prove that to you.

Be Wary Of Megapixel Ratings

Megapixel ratings for trail cameras seem to increase more & more every year. In reality, the native resolution of 99% of all trail cameras is 5 megapixels or less.  Manufacturers artificially inflate megapixel ratings for advertising purposes through a process called interpolation. Interpolated photos are enhanced by software to mimic the file size of a higher megapixel photo, but seldom offer additional clarity or resolution.  The result is an exponentially larger file size photo which takes longer to load and slows down the speed of your camera.  We always program our cameras to capture photos at the image sensor's native resolution. This allows our cameras to operate as efficiently as possible and store more photos to memory.  With shorter load times,  this also allows us to review photos at a much quicker pace.  To put things in perspective, the trail camera widely considered to be the "Gold Standard" and used by more professional researchers than any other unit is just 3 megapixels.

Case Design

The outer case has the appearance and feel of a solid, quality camera. It has a beefy back bracket for the included nylon strap but is not compatible with the standard 5/16th python cable lock. However, a 1/4" Python lock is available which works without modification. There are two tripod inserts, one on the back and one on the bottom. However, the latches are small and somewhat difficult to open and close.

The HD King is one of only a handful of trail cameras that has an integrated solar panel. The solar panel charges an internal 5200 mah lithium battery. The camera also uses (4)  AA batteries as a backup to the internal battery

Batteries are loaded fast & easy and retained securely in the case. The SD card snaps in and out with relative ease. Overall, this is a solid case design with some clear advantages.

This camera has the ability to turn on the side sensors to increase or decrease the width of the detection zone. It also has password protection (optional), PIR sensitivity, and time lapse options.

Wi-Fi

The HD King is the only camera we carry with any type of Wi-Fi capability.  While this camera won't capture and automatically transmit images like a cellular trail camera, it does have one unique advantage.  A  user can connect wirelessly to view and download photos without physically opening the camera as long as they are within 30 feet range. This allows  someone to mount the camera high above and record activity without fear of theft. Will not connect to home Wi-Fi network. Creates a Wi-Fi network you can connect to via app.

Durability

The vast majority of consumer-grade trail cameras are inexpensive, imported devices exposed to harsh conditions 24/7/365.  Most manufacturers only offer a one-year warranty.  We stock only the most durable units and provide an additional year of warranty at no extra charge. The Trailcampro exclusive 2-year warranty allows you to deal directly with Trailcampro avoiding long wait times on hold with the manufacturer and prolonged periods without a replacement camera.  We turn around most warranties in just one business day!
