Trailcampro Analysis

We have been reviewing and using Reconyx game cameras for many years now. Their attention to detail, incredible speed, picture quality, and durability have rightfully placed Reconyx at the top of the trail camera mountain.

When you buy a Reconyx, you are getting an American made manufacturing marvel. Just hold the camera and you can instantly tell this was made by folks who take great pride in their work.

We have an old Reconyx RM45 that has been on a farm in northern Missouri for ten years now. It works as well today as it did when we first set it out. Don't let the sticker shock of a Reconyx camera scare you away, these cameras are built to last.

Picture Quality:

Photo resolution: 3.1 mpxl | Video Resolution: None | Flash Type: No Glow Infrared

The difference from the HC500 to the Reconyx HC600 is the type of glow produced from the infrared emitters. The HC600 is completely covert, you will not see a red glow. The HC500 produces a faint red glow that is visible really only when looking directly at the camera or close by.

The day pictures are crystal clear, with almost no blurring. The colors are rich and vibrant and rank among the best on the market.

Most companies these days advertise high megapixel ratings on their cameras. Their high mpxl ratings are actually interpolated images, which is taken from a smaller mpxl camera but enlarged. Reconyx takes 3.1 mpxl photos, from an actual 3.1 mpxl camera.

The night pictures surprised us big time this year. They are somehow brighter than the HC600's sister camera, the HC500 (which is red glow infrared). This has been a big change from the past and makes the additional money for the HC600 well worth it. We currently have the HC600's night pictures as having the second best flash range (second only to the Reconyx SC950).

Battery Life:

Resting Power (on): 1.44 mW | Daytime Power Consumption: 1.12 Ws | Nighttime Power Consumption: 3.50 Ws

The HC600 uses 12 AA batteries. The HC600 has an extremely low resting current draw and a low current draw while taking a photo both during the day and night. This is truly impressive data and speaks volumes to the quality of the product.

Reconyx cameras work perfectly with the Tenergy Nimh Rechargeable Batteries. We like these batteries for the cost savings. We have noticed as of the summer of 2012 that the battery meter on the Reconyx cameras has been spotty and incorrect quite often. It has been giving incorrect readings.

Lithium batteries will give you the longest battery life and the best night picture quality. If this camera were to take 35-day pictures and 35-night pictures every 24 hours, this camera could last an unbelievable 18.9 months in the field (with lithiums).

Detection Circuit:

Picture Trigger & Recovery Speed: 0.28 s. / 0.9 s. | Video Trigger & Recovery Speed: None | Detection Range: 60 ft

With a 0.28-second trigger speed (about the time it takes you to blink), you won't miss a thing. Even better, the recovery time (time between first and second picture) is nearly instant. You get roughly 1 picture per second if there is movement in front of the camera.

This is one of the fastest detection circuits on the market. Since this Reconyx camera does not take videos, we could not calculate a video trigger or recovery time into the rankings.

The detection zone perfectly matches the field of view (very rare for any camera to do this). The detection range is 60 ft.

Quality of Design:

Dimensions: 5.5" x 4.5" x 3" | Battery Type: 12 AA Batteries | External Battery Jack: None

The camera is very small. It measures in at 5.5" x 4.5" x 3." As soon as you start the camera up for the first time, you realize this isn't your same-old game camera. This is the real-deal. Instantly, it asks for the year, date, time, what type of batteries you are using and so on. All this information is then saved.

The buttons are crisp and you immediately realize the quality in your hands. The clamps on the camera are strong and snap loudly, letting you know the camera is securely shut.

Two negative items knock the quality of design rating. The camera does not take videos, only pictures. Also, the battery meter does not accurately measure all types of batteries.

          Worth the price!

"I have several trail cameras from different makers but until now I have not purchased a Reconyx. I am very satisfied with it! I tried it in places where I have had other cameras so I have a good baseline to compare to. My other cameras take a mix of still and video. They often take near misses. At night some white out the animal no matter what the setting. This has not been a problem with the Reconyx and so far I am using the default settings! Right now I have the Reconyx placed where it gets lots of day and night traffic. I’m hoping to upload a photo that may not look great but you need to know the story. One of the (other brand) cameras caught a video of a mountain lion coming up the trail. Next thing the Reconyx caught a blurry image of the lion running up the road. I can say with almost certainty that the other brand cameras most likely would have triggered too slowly to catch the cat—he would have been gone. Or the image would have been too blurry to tell just what it was. The third in the series the Reconyx to has the lion heading off down a trail where I have another camera. That camera captured very blurry video of the lion’s real quite a ways down the trail as it bounded away. Other Reconyx photos from this spot show a bobcat just entering the frame—an indication to me that it triggers quickly. I have so many photos of tails or just nothing from other cameras. I am happy with the color of the daytime photos. And i feel that the sharpness of nighttime photos is great—when the animal isn’t running full out of course. Deer browsing look sharp and their eyes aren’t distractingly glowy. This camera feels wonderfully substantial. It is easy to mount once you get used to this type fastening—I mount mostly on trees. I like the carry handle because the camera is heavy when you are moving it and i would not want to drop it. It opens and closes with a nice click. As I said above, so far I have only used the default settings. I will experiment when I’ve used it a bit more."

          worth it

"Spend the money, buy the best. Great pictures and a quality made camera. This camera fires and resets so fast, there is no need for video mode. Scrolling through the pictures is like watching a video. I like the walk test mode as it is nice to know it is capturing images after the cam is locked up in the security box and python cable. After using a Reconyx Hyperfire HC600, I have no interest in trying or owning another brand. Boots, binos, bows, or rifles, I have no time or use for cheap equipment. Buy what works in all conditions and situations. Same with trail cams. Buy the Reconyx."

          Reconyx hc600

"I wanted to wait a few weeks to give a fair report, so here goes. Pic quality: I'm not sure if it takes any better pics then other good cams on the market, but once I got it set up, every single day and night pic is great. Very consistent, I am very pleased with the quality of pics. Ease of use: the cam just feels like a quality piece of equipment, the interface and options are great and easy to use. Battery life: for this reason alone I give this cam 5 stars! Using the lithium batteries it's been out 4 weeks now, taken over 5000 pics and still shows 99% battery life. This is a true "set it and forget it cam". I will certainly but another cam before I experiment with cheaper cams to see if I can get two for possibly the same price as one of these. We will see!"

          HC 600

"Trigger range less than 50 feet at night for human target and temperature 80-85 degrees. Closer to 30-35 feet. Might be replacing."

HC600 fires when the temperature is in the single digits

"I’ve had this camera for a handful of weeks. Pros: easy to program, easy to operate, day photos are very good with realistic depth, color, and contrast, takes photos in rapid succession. Cons: pricy, walking animals at night have motion blur, flash is only in the center of the frame, flash distance is less than I anticipated."

          Q&A

Any word on why Reconyx discontinued this camera?
They replaced it with the Hyperfire 2. I'm sure they just did it because the HC500 & HC600's had been out so long.
Are the HC600 and HC500 useful cameras for capturing photos of vehicles and human intruders? Secondly, does the erase feature serve as a reformat action? Otherwise, I would reformat on my Canon camera if that would work.
Yes, they are very useful for animals, people, and vehicles. For vehicles, they will get the make/model but NOT a license plate at night. For license plate pictures at night, look at the Reconyx SM750: https://www.trailcampro.com/collections/reconyx-trail-cameras/products/reconyx-hyperfire-sm750
